Chrysobalanus Icaco / Cocoplum

Uses: Cocoplum is most commonly used as a medium to fast-growing hedge.

Characteristics: Cocoplum is native to Florida so it is easy to care for in the landscape. With regular shearing it will take on a formal look, but if left natural, Cocoplum is very loose and informal.

Trimming: For the more formal look, shear Cocoplum every other month. Shape to create a rounded appearance from the front. Do not square off. Trimming every other month will still provide a neat appearance, but the overall look of the hedge will be better as plants will have more time to re-grow new leaves, thus keeping the plants fuller and healthier. Skip the shearing in the 'winter month' as Cocoplum will all but stop growing and new growth will not cover cuts until temperatures climb. For buffer or privacy plantings, shear the front and top in March and October.

Fertilization: Though not particularly fertilizer hungry, Cocoplum will benefit from a high nitrogen blend, time released fertilizer three times per year. Apply in March, June, and October to coincide with trimming schedule. This will help keep plants full to the base.
