Use: Used as an accent, it is a stunning ornamental due to its blue/grey trunks that are beautiful and striking.
Characteristics: Tropical Blue Bamboo is fast fast-growing and usually tops out at 35’-40 feet in height. This plant needs a moist location with fertile soil.
Trimming: Remove any damaged culms. In the spring and fall, thin out at most 1/3 of the culms by cutting off at ground level. See photos below for a typical look.
Fertilization/Pests: Use Palm Tree Fertilizer in March, June, and October. Generally, this is a fast-growing accent that requires little, or no fertilizer once established. Bamboo Mites are not uncommon. They live under the leaves, where a web protects them. They suck the juices from the leaf and leave a white or cream-colored patch on the upper surface. In severe infestations, these patches can cover the entire leaf. Contact a professional pest control company for treatment.
